Build-up, wat is dat eigenlijk?

What exactly is build-up?

Curly hair can be beautiful, but it can also be challenging to care for. One of the biggest challenges is preventing build-up.

But what exactly is build-up? Build-up is the accumulation of waste, product residue, sebum, oils, and dirt in the hair. This can cause your curls to look dull, frizzy, greasy, and lifeless, and may even lead to breakage and other hair and scalp issues.

In short, build-up is a layer of residue and dirt that collects on the hair shaft. Curly hair is more vulnerable than straight hair because its structure is completely different and naturally drier.

Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent build-up in curly hair. Here are some tips:

  1. Use the right products. Choose products specifically designed for curly hair that provide moisture.
  2. Avoid silicones, drying alcohol, mineral oils, sulfates, and heavy oils.
  3. Wash your hair regularly. Regular washing helps prevent build-up. Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo made for curls.
  4. Use a clarifying/detox shampoo every 5–6 weeks. If you notice build-up, use a clarifying shampoo to cleanse thoroughly. Don’t overuse it, as it can dry out your hair.
  5. Rinse your hair thoroughly. Make sure no shampoo or conditioner residue remains.
  6. Always finish with our Cleanser, the curl shampoo, to partially close the cuticles and restore your scalp’s pH balance.
  7. Limit styling products. Avoid formulas with silicones, drying alcohol, and heavy oils.
  8. Use a hair mask. Apply a deep moisturizing mask regularly, such as our 4-in-1 Moisturizer. See flyer for details.

Summary:

How to recognize build-up

  1. Curls look greasy
  2. Lack of shine
  3. No curl definition
  4. Hair feels heavy
  5. Loss of bounce

What causes build-up?

  1. No detox every 4–6 weeks
  2. Natural accumulation of sebum and oils
  3. Not cleansing the scalp thoroughly
  4. Non-water-soluble silicones
  5. Product overload
  6. Sweat on the scalp (the body eliminates waste through pores)
  7. Coconut oil: masks frizz but causes severe build-up, only removed after about 10 detox washes.

Important:

  1. Use a detox/clarifying shampoo every 5–6 weeks.
  2. Follow with a mask if needed. Apply the Moisturizer generously as a mask. See flyer or ask at a Curls Control salon for advice.
  3. Maintain balance between moisture, care, and nutrients.

Good luck and enjoy your curls!

By following these tips, you can prevent build-up in curly hair and keep your curls healthy and shiny. If you’re already struggling with build-up, be patient and give your hair time to recover. With the right care, curls can look beautiful and stay strong.
