Moisture balance

Frizzy, exploded curls – they really annoy us, don't they?

Hydration is the key to controlling your curls. But how do we ensure the right moisture balance? Curly hair has a different structure than "regular" straight hair, and maintaining the right moisture balance is crucial for healthy, bouncy curls.

We're happy to explain why moisture balance is so important for curly hair. We'll also give you tips on how to maintain that balance.

Why is moisture balance so important for curly hair?

Curly hair naturally has a higher porosity than straight hair. This is because curls have a different structure. This causes the hair cuticles to be more open, allowing moisture to penetrate the hair more easily, but also to escape more quickly. This can lead to an imbalance in moisture balance, resulting in dry, brittle, frizzy, and flat curls. Curls that no longer want to curl, even though they actually wish they did. We always say: your curls don't get frizzy in the shower, do they? If they do, then they lack moisture balance and proper care.

The right moisture balance keeps your hair healthy and maintains its natural bounce. It helps reduce frizz and adds shine. If you don't pay attention to it, your hair can become damaged, brittle, and dull. Moisture alone isn't enough – hydration with good ingredients in care and nutrition is essential.

Did you know:

  • About 80% of our curls consist of moisture?
  • It is quite normal for moisture to evaporate from your curls when exposed to sunlight or a warm radiator?
  • It is very useful to use the spray to quickly bring back moisture, because the products are still in your curls?

Tips to create the right moisture balance:

How do you create moisture balance in your curls?
After gently and thoroughly cleansing your scalp, it's important to add moisture to your curls. You do this by kneading—in the curl world, we call it "scrunching." Squeeze and knead moisture into your curls until you hear a smacking sound, but the water no longer drips out. At that point, you've achieved the right moisture balance and the moisturizer can do its work. If your hair is too wet, the moisturizer won't penetrate, and you won't achieve the right balance. Once you've laid the right foundation, you can continue with the Curls Control product line.

All four products are coordinated in terms of proteins, nourishing oils, and conditioning ingredients. Use a moisturizing shampoo – a good one is sulfate-free and contains hydrolyzed wheat protein. Wheat is a grain, and grain retains moisture.

Using shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for curly hair helps maintain moisture balance. Our products are rich in hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, jojoba oil, and argan oil.

  • Use a leave-in product; it's always practical. Depending on your hair's porosity, you can choose whether to rinse it out, rinse it partially, or leave it in completely.
  • Using the moisturizer as a leave-in helps enormously in maintaining moisture balance. The leave-in doesn't rinse off and delivers moisture all day long. Remember: less is more. Too much product will make your curls heavy and greasy.
  • Don't use a cotton towel – it pulls moisture and product from your curls. Plus, cotton is too abrasive.
  • Pamper your curls regularly with a nourishing mask – the Moisturizer offers this option.
  • Limit the use of heating appliances.
  • Protect your hair from the sun. UV rays dry it out and disrupt its moisture balance. Wear a hat or scarf, or use a styling product with UV protection.

Conclusion:

The right moisture balance is essential for healthy curly hair. By choosing hydrating products, regularly applying a moisturizing mask, scrunching your hair well, and protecting your curls from heat and UV rays, you'll keep your curls bouncy, healthy, and radiant.
