No more dry curls: 5 tips

Dry curls: a problem many people with curly hair face. In some cases, dry hair can even lead to breakage – something you definitely want to avoid. Fortunately, there are ways to keep your curls hydrated. Here are some helpful tips!

What causes dry curls?

Curly hair naturally has higher porosity than straight hair. This is because curls have a different structure. The cuticles in curly hair remain more open, which means moisture can enter the hair more easily but also escape more quickly. This can disrupt the moisture balance, resulting in dry curls.

Tip 1: Protect your hair from heat

We recommend avoiding heat tools. Heat can disrupt your hair’s natural moisture balance and cause dryness and damage.

UV rays can also dry out your hair. That’s why we suggest protecting your hair from the sun. Wear a hat or scarf outdoors, or use a styling product with UV protection. Our Curl Crème is perfect for this!

Tip 2: Wash your hair with a shampoo made for curls

Dry curls? Chances are this is (at least partly) caused by using the wrong hair products. A good shampoo is essential in any routine. In our collection, you’ll find three sulfate-free shampoos formulated specifically for curly hair.

Tip 3: Dry your hair with a hydrophilic towel

Do you usually dry your hair with a regular towel? That can cause it to soak up products from your hair. A better alternative is a hydrophilic towel, which is much gentler on curls. Use it to carefully pat or scrunch your wet hair dry.

Tip 4: Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase

A satin or silk pillowcase – or sleeping with a bonnet – can make a huge difference for curly hair. Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture from your hair, leaving it dry and frizzy. Satin and silk do not, which helps curls stay hydrated and defined.

Tip 5: Scrunch your hair after washing

After washing your scalp thoroughly with a sulfate-free shampoo, it’s important to lock in moisture by scrunching. Push your curls upward toward your scalp and repeat until you hear a squishy sound from the moisture, but no more water drips out. That means your curls have the right moisture balance.

Tip 6: Hydrate your hair

As mentioned, dryness comes from a disrupted moisture balance. Struggling with it? Then it’s time to give your hair a real hydration boost. Our Moisturizer helps with this. It’s a nourishing cream that hydrates, conditions, and balances your curls. Best of all, it’s a 4-in-1 product you can use as a conditioner, leave-in, mask, or DIY treatment.

Dealing with very dry hair? Using the Moisturizer as a leave-in helps a lot to maintain your hair’s moisture balance. Apply it after scrunching your curls.

You can also use the Moisturizer as a mask from time to time. In that case, rinse it out afterward. We recommend using it as a mask every three to four weeks, depending on your hair’s condition.

Tip 7: Style with nourishing products

Did you know the right styling products can also nourish your hair? This is especially important if you’re dealing with dryness. We offer several styling products you can use:

  • Argan oil: Our argan oil hydrates, repairs, and protects curls from damage.
  • Curl Crème: Curl Crème defines and strengthens curls. It makes hair smooth, adds natural shine, and protects against heat and UV rays.
