7 tips for dry curls

People with curls often struggle with dry hair. In some cases it can even lead to breakage — a nightmare for any head of curls. The good news: there are effective ways to keep your curls soft and healthy. Here are our top tips.

How do curls become dry?

Curly hair is naturally more porous than straight hair. Its structure is different and the cuticle layer is more open. Moisture can enter and escape more easily, which often creates an imbalance. The result: dry, stressed curls.

Tip 1: Protect your hair from heat

Heat is one of your curls’ biggest enemies. Skip flat irons, curling wands, and similar tools. They disrupt your hair’s moisture balance and cause dryness and structural damage.

UV radiation can also dry out hair. Protect your curls with a hat, wear a scarf, or use a styling product with UV protection, such as our Curl Crème.

Tip 2: Use a curl-specific shampoo

Using the wrong products can also lead to dryness. The right products are critical. Remove sulfate shampoos from your routine. Instead, choose one of our three sulfate-free options formulated for curly hair.

Tip 3: Dry with a hydrophilic towel

Regular towels pull moisture and valuable product from your hair. A gentler alternative is a hydrophilic towel to blot or scrunch out water.

Tip 4: Sleep on satin or silk pillowcases

Cotton pillowcases pull moisture while you sleep and speed up drying. Satin or silk helps curls stay hydrated and maintain definition.

Tip 5: Scrunch after washing

After thoroughly rinsing with our sulfate-free shampoo, add moisture to your curls. Scrunch upward toward the scalp until you hear a light squishy sound. If nothing drips, your curls are well hydrated.

Tip 6: Hydrate your hair

Balanced moisture is essential for curly hair. Our Moisturizer Crème provides intensive care and can be used as a conditioner, leave-in, mask, or a custom styling base. For very dry hair, apply it as a leave-in after scrunching or use it as a mask occasionally (about every three to four weeks).

Tip 7: Style with nourishing products

The right styling products feed your hair with nutrients — a must for dry hair. Our range includes:

  • Argan oil: hydrates, repairs, and protects against damage.

  • Curl Crème: defines curls, softens hair, and adds shine.
